One piano, one beach, lots of fire.

On the 26th March 06 we managed aquire a pretty decent piano for free via Freecycle. It sat majestically in the corner of our student house in Aberystwyth, and although not in fantastic condition or perfectly in tune we all had fun playing on it.

We are all 3rd year students and will be moving over the next few weeks. We had originally planned to leave the piano for future tenants to enjoy, however our landlord did not agree to this. Therefore we had to get rid of it. It would have been nice to have found a new home for it, and a number of people we knew expressed a casual interest in taking it. But would they really have? It's easy enough to say you'll take it but it takes a lot of effort to move a piano.

One drunken night the idea of burning it was put forward. It was clearly the most rock n' roll thing to do, and would be very memorable if we could pull it off. Years later we may return to Aber and people would come up and say "hey! you're those guys that burnt the piano on the beach back in 06!". Its the stuff of legends.

Around late May we started investigating into the construction of the piano. The panels, keys and hammers could all be removed easily. We were also hoping to be able to remove the heavy metal frame to make it easier to move, however it was so tightly built into the main body this was deemed impossible. Removing all the other parts did make it a bit easier to move.

The 1st of June saw summer properly arriving, conditions we perfect, it was on. At around 9pm we pushed the piano on its wheels down the road to the beach. Passers by looked on quizzically but we ignored their stares and kept pushing. Once at the beach it was just a matter of brute strength to carry it into position.

The pieces were reassembled with lighting gel was squirted all over the inside of the piano, and fire cakes placed between the keys.

The complete piano ready for burning. Some of the keys were removed and given as souvenirs.

A large wooden stick was lit and used to start the fire, while puns were made such as "I have an instrumental role in this" and "i'm a key player".

The flames came up from under the keys and round the back to engulf the piano.

The fire grows more intense.

A crowd of onlookers gather to watch, many giving us praise and congratulations for pulling it off.

The fire burns away the panels revealing the strings, which gradually snap free.

The majority of the wood has been burnt, revealing the skeletal metal frame.

The frame toppels over and is then used to toast marshmellows.

The next day we returned to the beach and spent about an hour picking up all the screws, strings and pieces of metal that had been left. Including the large metal frame which weighed an absolute ton. This is all that remains of the piano.

It was a fantastic night, a truely unforgettable event. Some people have been quick to criticise us, and were appauled that we even considered doing it. But we stand by our actions. This is art.

Hey it's their piano, they can do what they want with it. It's probably wasn't worth their while to find someone who could be bothered to pick it up.
I personally would have left it outside or something for a bit and waited to see if it went.
What I wanna know is did it make any noises while it burned (like when the strings snapped), if it did you could have recorded them and called that art.

I'm disappointed no one attempted to play it while it was on fire.

but they got it for FREE from FREECYCLE. They should have made every effort to find a new owner for it through the same project they got it for free from.

Plus, if you look how long they had it for - they got it as recently as March this year and yet it didnt cross their mind that they would be at the house for as little as 4 months later.

Pathetic. Just plain pathetic.

Man, so many hate filled messages, you ppl are pathetic! your saying you have never ever done anything wasteful in your life - example:

"they burned a beautiful old piano that someone else could have used"

Guranteed whoever wrote this probably doesnt recycle everything they use. Your only complaining because it happens to be a piano, and therefore is more likely to offend your 'morally superior' stance.

My point is that half the ppl complaining about a piano being burned probably dont recycle, and probably do drive petrol guzzling cars - your all hypocrits!

Obviously this is a bit of a generalisation, but come on! Every individual is wasteful in some respect, so to criticise ppl for doing something that you have no doubt done yourself in your own way is plain idiocy!

You people need to get over your silly morals, cos in the end your all getting high and mighty about what is essentially someone wasting something that COULD be recycled - but because its a piano instead of a used can of coke that you cant be arsed to recycle you've decided to get all arsey about it. pathetic, just pathetic.

I know one of the imfamous piano burners due to him being my brother.

I kinda suggested the whole piano burning thing, or at least encouraged it at its early stages :)

The piano was basically pretty knackered. It was out of tune and had a broken pedal. Although OK for a singalong or two, due to the cost of moving, repairing, and tuning the thing, its monetary value was nil.

It wasn't even a good piano when new, so you people should stop acting like it's a friggin Beckstein.

They tried to freecycle it to no avail. The options were either to leave it in the house (and get fined by the landlord) or to leave it outside the house (and get prosecuted by the council).

Ultimately, on a student's last day at Aber Uni there are usually only two things to do: Go to the Union, or get beaten up by locals. Most students end up doing both.

Thanks to these intrepid lads there is now a third option on the Aberystwythian social agenda : Piano Burning! I for one think that all those involved deserve nothing but applause. And possibly money.

You’ll go for years off of this experience...why? Because nothing better is going to happen in your lives.

It must really suck that your life is "peaking" your 3rd year of college. And for what? Burning a piano?

Wow. That is totally going to suck for you.

How many people have you told about this great "piece of art" that you did? How many parties have you just talked it up, laughed it up, and embellished this little nugget of fame.

Your polishing a turd of a life, accented by a small, gleaming, drop of jizz in an otherwise sad existence.

Somebody could have written a beautiful song on that piano. Someone could have discovered a lifetime of enjoyment the art of playing music. But not anymore.

Go fourth with your erections of fame. Enjoy what little you have been given from this. This is all your life will amount to. Think back on my comment a year from now, five years from now, twenty years from now. In the back of your mind try to remember every time you tell the story of the piano burning, remember, that this is all the 15 minutes of fame your life will have. What a sad and pointless existence you will live.

Oh, well done. Well done for screwing up FreeCycle, for screwing up other students' opportunities, and for making yourself look like a prize pair of selfish, stupid, childish twats in the process.

So how long before Mr & Mrs Daily Mail reader get to read about your stupid little stunt over their breakfast toast? A week? A fortnight?

At that point do you know what'll become firmly fixed in their minds? Theey'll be firmly linking words like stupid, scrounging, drunkard, irresponsible, and ungrateful to the word student from then on.

As for FreeCycle, how many folks do you think you put off offering stuff now?

Other folks that might have been able to reuse items now won't even see them offered, because you've just give folks ammunition, you've just sown enough doubt in their minds that if they put something in the FreeCycle pool it'll get abused. Not everyone wants something they can't use anymore wasted like that.

As for the chances of students getting any benefit from FreeCycle anymore, well, the more publicity you get for yourselves, the more it'll work against them. What are the chances of anyone giving a piano away to a budding-but-poor music student now, eh?

You think you're "legends"?

No, you're not "legends" - but you're definitely Bell-Ends.

It doesn't matter whether you reckoned it was beyond repair or not - do you think the average person will get to hear that?

Besides, there are loads of things that can be done with old pianos - unless you had it properly checked, it's quite possible someone could have fixed it, or use it to fix OTHER pianos. Did you even think (Oops - might as well stop this question right there, eh? It's pretty obvious you didn't!)

Did you even think about contacting any local piano repairers or tuners to see if they'd take it away to use for spares?

Just think about the keys, for instance - they're VERY re-useable, especially the IVORY!

Since 70% of piano parts are made of wood, it is relatively easy to recycle them. Moreover, only a few parts are required to rebuild or repair a piano compared to building a brand-new one, we can surely reduce the damage to forest resources, which is one of the largest issues we face today.

Even if not, look at this:

You are fools. Worse than that, you are fools that don't even realise how foolish you are, but take pride in your stupidity.

Please try not to breed - the gene pool is bad enough as it is.

What a remarkable collective of winners. So someone, once upon a time, put mountains of labourious effort and love into the construction of one of the most beautiful instruments ever made, and years later it was destroyed by a bunch of drunken wankers who thought they were being immensely clever. Who'd have guessed that third year degree students could be such a bunch of thick fucks? Do you beat people up for irony's sake? Tosser.

Now here's your real problem: what about the REST of your lives?

After all, if this is your grand statement, aren't you worried that you all have peaked with it?

I'd be worried. If I were you, I'd be very concerned that this weak, moronic act and the dim urge behind it represents the very peak of your contributions to this world.

What could lie ahead? Children, capital, stress, illness, death.

And the memory of your creative peak on the beach.

That piano's frame is heavy, all right. It will likely root you down to that night forever.

Good work.

"It's easy enough to say you'll take it but it takes a lot of effort to move a piano."

Yet when it comes to burning one you managed to push it down the road and manhandle it onto a beach? So what stopped you from pushing it down the road to the local charity shop and giving it to them? Or you could have saved all that energy and looked in the yellow pages for a charity shop and they would have arranged to collect it from you, you probably would have had to help them get it into their van, but hey, since you can get it all the way to the beach a van would be a breeze. So, given all these options, what did you decide to do? Abuse the freecycle system, and completely piss on everything it stands for. Wow, what an achievement! You should all be so proud of yourselves.

Not to mention the amount of pollution burning the thing would have caused. Seriously, it would have been better for all concerned if you had stuffed yourselves into the piano before you lit it up, at least then you would have rid the world of your stupidity.

"I have been using Advanced Gain Pro for 3 months now and I must say I'm simply amazed. I really didn't think the product would have this many benefits. I really only purchased the pills to help the reliability of my erections. But to my surprise every aspect of my penis and sex life has improved. I have larger, harder erections easily, and I can really satisfy my girlfriend fully now."
